Why Clean a Mattress?

The average person spends approximately eight hours a day in bed, and those unfortunate enough to be unwell, often longer. Our beds are frequently thought of as being a place to escape to, maybe even a reward at the end of a hard day. Weekend "lie-ins" might be seen as a treat, a special occurrence that we have earned after a hectic week... but are we really treating ourselves when we retire to bed at the end of the day?

Person with the snuffles No matter how clean the home, all mattresses are prone to the same problem. When we sleep, we produce up to half a litre of perspiration each night, and also shed about a gram of skin each day - those suffering from dermatitis even more. We wear nightclothes which we wash regularly together with our bed linen, however these offer us little protection against what is occurring inside our mattress.

Very quickly the mattress will become host to a multitude of horrors, from bacteria to fungal spores and microscopic house dust mites that feed off dead flakes of skin. Is it any wonder that without being cleaned, the mattress could be the dirtiest item in your home? It's estimated that there are as many as two million house dust mites living in a mattress - and in an average pillow, 10% of its weight is made up of dead skin and dust mites.

Nurse House dust mites find a mattress to be the perfect breeding ground. With warmth and moisture and no natural enemies, they will establish themselves within a mattress within several months. They have no pride in their surroundings leaving mess wherever they are... and it is this mess, their droppings, which cause most problems. These have been medically proven to trigger a whole host of allergic reactions, from asthma, eczema and bronchitis, to itchy eyes and sneezing attacks.

Even protective bedding sheets have no effect in reducing problems like asthma, when they are the only measure taken. The idea of mattress cleaning isn't a new one. In other European countries along with the United States, it has been performed for years, but the concept is new in the United Kingdom. AllergEase provides a three stage, chemical-free service that detoxifies your mattress leaving it dust mite free, all performed on site using custom built, state of the art equipment.

"It is thought that people who have atopic eczema may be affected by allergens in the droppings of the house dust mite. It is believed that reducing the amount of house dust mites in the home may improve the condition of the skin."
